The Future of Work: Innovative. Connected. Human

What will the future of work look like? How are workplaces and working conditions currently changing? At the eleven Berlin Zukunftsorte (places of future innovation), with 42 scientific institutions and over 2,000 companies, people from various disciplines are researching answers to these questions. Here, research and business come together to develop innovations that will shape the future of work.

Science and Business: A Strong Network

With their ecosystem of universities, startup incubators, and companies, the Zukunftsorte offer an ideal environment for knowledge transfer and practice-oriented research in Berlin. This is where startups meet established companies, and researchers meet experts from the field. These synergies make it possible to quickly transfer scientific findings into economic applications, strengthening the region’s innovative power for the benefit of society. Together, the Zukunftsorte are driving technological progress and creating solutions that are revolutionizing the world of work. This involves implementing innovative approaches in a wide range of areas, from creative collaboration between humans and machines to smart systems and new work structures and environments.

Humans and Machines: New Synergies
Advanced robots developed at the Zukunftsorte with humans and support them in their daily work. From painting robots that do the rough work for people, exoskeletons that provide relief during physical work, to robot arms used for prototype design – the Zukunftsorte show that machines and robotic elements can make human work more creative, healthier, and more efficient
New Work Structures: Flexibility, Collaboration, Health
Research projects at the Zukunftsorte are already exploring and applying agile working methods and flat hierarchies to boost the creativity and flexibility of teams. Holistic concepts combine co-working with maker spaces and allow for focused work, social networking, and the generation of new ideas. The mental and physical health of employees is also prioritized by developing and testing innovative technologies and methods for promoting health at the Zukunftsorte.
New Work Environments through Smart Systems
The Zukunftsorte are key hubs for deep tech in the capital city. Smart technologies are making our work environments more intelligent and sustainable. At the Zukunftsorte, universities, and companies are jointly discovering how virtual reality can be used to make industrial work more efficient or equipment maintenance safer. This close collaboration is also leading to the establishment of AI-based systems for smart recruiting processes and employee training. This creates new working environments.
