MotionLab.Berlin: New Work Structures to Promote Hardtech Innovation | CleanTech Marzahn

What does the future of work look like today at the Zukunftsorte? For the area of hard tech innovation, MotionLab.Berlin, located at the Zukunftsort Cleantech Marzahn, provides an answer.

Collaboration Over Competition

People with hardware ideas often have great ideas but lack the means to implement them. Inventing new high-tech products is challenging because few places combine the necessary space, technology, machines, and community. That’s why MotionLab.Berlin was founded as a huge community where everyone can develop technology. At the Marzahn site, it is located on the campus of the Berlin.Industrial.Group (B.I.G.). The future of work here means collaboration instead of competition. MotionLab.Berlin is a hard tech innovation hub and the leading hardware accelerator in Germany. High-tech startups there have access to machines, financial overviews, mentoring, and a large community from which everyone can benefit. In addition, MotionLab.Berlin also works with medium-sized high-tech companies and continues to develop the campus.

The resident teams are supported from the initial idea to the final prototype. Various teams familiarize the members with the machines or software, take care of sudden issues, or supervise day-to-day business. From the maker garage to the metal workshop, wood workshop, and workbenches to conventional office space, there are different rental models to meet the individual needs of the people.

Supporting Tomorrow’s Hardtech Experts

The goal of MotionLab.Berlin is to offer hardtech startups the same opportunities as digital startups. An important and forward-looking aspect of the work at MotionLab.Berlin is, therefore, to support early-stage hardtech startups with expert knowledge and direct support. This is achieved, among other things, through thematic bootcamps with industry experts from the community and the extended innovation network.

The Hardtech Innovation Accelerator is another offering from MotionLab.Berlin. It provides a combination of access to prototyping machines, a state-of-the-art makerspace, and extensive startup expertise. The seven-month program enables participants to develop their startups from a basic idea to a validated mid-fidelity prototype that is ready for the market. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills to present their products with confidence and passion.

“This program was developed specifically for early-stage hardware and climate tech startups and is absolutely unique. There is nothing else like it in Berlin. It offers all the resources and the necessary knowledge to develop a hardware product,” explains Mariann Egressy, Head of Accelerator and Ecosystem at MotionLab.Berlin.
